James Beard Award winner Matt Molina gets back to cooking seasonal California fare at Hippo, an underrated neighborhood dining secret that hides behind Triple Beam Pizza along Highland Park’s bustling Figueroa thoroughfare. The food is approachable, reasonably priced, and full of flavor, all served in an inviting high-ceiling dining room.

Highland Park keeps adding compelling restaurants, and this ambitious Spanish restaurant from former Racion chef Teresa Montaño goes into a brick-lined slot along Figueroa Boulevard. With a wide array of tapas and paellas, plus strong drinks at the bar, it’s already bustling with eager locals.

Adam Perry Lang opens a robust steakhouse in the heart of Hollywood with dry-aged chops and a slate of accompany pasta, salads, and sides. The high-ceiling space has elements of Art Deco near the bar while the French-style cafe chairs and hefty banquettes keeps it classy. Bring a crew and order the trio of smoked short ribs, or share a broiled porterhouse steak.

Charles Olalia of Rice Bar has debuted his ode to Filipino cuisine at this bright, high-ceiling Silver Lake restaurant. Employing traditional flavors but serving plates with a modern twist, Olalia plays the hits with sisig, lumpia shanghai (topped with uni), and longganisa. Ma’am Sir is the latest installment of modern Filipino cuisine in Los Angeles, and that alone should make it a destination.

Bill Chait opens his newest LA restaurant, Tesse, along with Jordan Ogron, chef Raphael Francois, and Sally Camacho in a sleek, modern space in Sunset Strip. The menu leans on seasonal ingredients with a classic, French-style approach to charcuterie, salads, and pasta, with a huge hand from Camacho, who employs a fine dining streak to the desserts.

Jones and The Pikey founder Jared Meisler has teamed up with Sean MacPherson again to open a French-style cocktail hangout with bistro classics on the menu. It’s a party almost every night, with a crowd up front vying for stirred absinthe drinks while the back patio feels like a lush garden seemingly miles away from the bustle of West Hollywood.

Downtown’s modern Indian restaurant has expanded to a nifty location across from Canter’s Deli in Fairfax District, and already the place is buzzing with diners waiting outside for tables. Try the chicken tikka poutine or the butter chicken samosas to start. Then dive into the ghost chili lamb vindaloo and excellent channa masala.

One of Jonathan Gold’s favorite restaurants, Porridge & Puffs returns after a years-long hiatus from chef Minh Phan, who once ran the place in Hollywood. With a new Historic Filipinotown operation, Phan is more adventurous than ever, serving a market-oriented set of comforting rice porridge bowls in a friendly neighborhood space.

Beverly Hills has a flashy new place for Greek seafood. Avra seems like it’s reaching hard for the see-and-be-seen crowd, with a massive dining room along Beverly Drive, a sidewalk-facing patio, and easy-drinking cocktails. But along with the scene comes a slew of fresh fish flown in from around the world, grilled over wood and served without too much adornment. It’s a formula that should work really well for the neighborhood.

Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis open their ode to the flavors of the Levant and Middle East in a bright dining room in Arts District. The Bestia owners wanted to feature the cuisine of their heritage, with a slew of quality mezzes, refined entrees, and comforting desserts that follow the same mold of its Italian predecessor: delicious, robust flavors with top-notch ingredients. Try the duck nduja hummus and the lamb shank.

Sotto and Rossoblu chef Steve Samson has opened a casual takeout spot with slices and whole pies using a unique dough that takes inspiration, but doesn’t completely emulate, New York City-style pizza. Just a few steps away from Rossoblu in Fashion District, this reasonably priced spot uses market-based ingredients and a three day dough proofing to serve what might be LA’s best new pizza this year.

The Scopa crew has opened a relaxed new Latin-inspired restaurant across from Rossoblu in Fashion District’s City Market South project, and the results are pretty terrific. Antonia Lofaso compiles a shareable menu of crispy squash flowers, oxtail tacos, and red snapper escabeche that work great after some frozen tropical cocktails. That patio is a great place to spend time during long summer nights.

Longtime truck Guerrilla Tacos finally has an expansive brick & mortar home after parking the mobile operation indefinitely. Chef Wes Avila expands the bill of fare with share plates and more homages to Chicano-American comfort food. But at its core, Guerrilla serves some of the city’s most inventive tacos, which should be reason alone to make the trek to Arts District.

A bright new addition to Santa Monica’s all day dining scene, The Gables serves morning coffee, fresh pastries, ready-to-eat salads, and hot plates like a mean patty melt. The casual vibe means counter service and reasonable prices too, which is a boon for typical overpriced Santa Monica menus.

Boasting a gorgeous ocean view and rooftop vibe, this trendy (perhaps a bit too trendy) restaurant in Santa Monica draws in a see-and-be-seen crowd from lunch to dinner. But aside from the clientele, the food punches well above its weight class, with a terrific array of wood-fired pizzas, house extruded pastas, and seasonal salads that should please just about any palate. The drinks are great too, if a tad pricey.
